"In the best-effort traffic
flow, every time a device or a cable modem wants
to send something on the Internet, it needs to first
ask the CMTS for permission. (With) unsolicited grant
service, the cable modem asks once and the CMTS just
grants it in perpetuity, presenting the opportunity
to transmit on the cable system until the cable modem
says it doesn't need it anymore," McCann said.

How to Succeed in Business: Keep It Simple
By Rob McCann
It's no secret that many operators are eyeing the small to medium business (SMB) sector as an alluring opportunity for growth in a non-traditional segment, but many potential new entrants are just learning about the splintered and disorganized nature of this market.

Fibre-to-the-home: How far away are we?
By Christian Isla
HYBRID-FIBRE COAX NETWORKS emerged in the 1990s to allow cable systems to extend to
areas beyond traditional coaxial cable's reach, but today there is an accelerating demand
for even more fibre - not merely for remote penetration, but instead for last mile
penetration directly to the home.

Clearcable Leverages Sangoma to Serve Ontario Cable Operators
By Greg Galitzine
Small Cable Operators are particularly motivated to offer voice services as part of their communications and entertainment bundles to residential and business subscribers. They need to be able to offer service similar in nature to those provided by much larger cable operators, but they are prohibited from entering the market because of the high cost of traditional switching infrastructure.

The Tuesday Interview: Mountain Cable launches business telephone
By Greg O'Brien
FIFTY-FIVE PERCENT can be an astonishing number. If you get a 55% in high school calculus,
well, you're barely passing. But if you're a cable company and in just over two years since
launch of local telephony 55% of your cable customers are also phone customers, well, that's
just pretty darn good.

Unsolicited Grant Service (UGS) Turns Mountain
Cablevision into a Voice Lighthouse
Signal to Noise: Useful Information and Analysis
By Jim Barthold
Cable telephony looks great
on a white board; sounds stunning at a shareholder
meeting; is a fine foundation for clever TV advertising
- and is a bear to do right. The earliest cable
telephony systems relied heavily on what the
phone companies had been doing for the past century
by using some version of time division multiplexing
(TDM). In the meantime, CableLabs, as is its
charter, continued to look for ways to make cable's
offering both better and unique to its broadband
pipe via the DOCSIS effort. |

All Voice Is Not Created Equal
TO ALL CABLE SYSTEMS CONSIDERING
telephony launch; beware
the market forces! There
are always basic economic
principles
at work in a
nascent competitive market
and voice over IP is no
exception.
By Rob McCann
The principle at work
in this case is simple; where there is
opportunity and profit, competitors will
emerge. With the evolution of technology
in the voice marketplace this has held
remarkably true especially over the past
18 months
where the barrier to entry has
fallen, as required for perfect competition,
to near insignificance.

Critical Success Factors in Selecting
a Voice Partner for Cable Systems
By Rob McCann
Too often investors
and business managers are seduced by
opportunity, prompt return, or sharp
technology, blinded by the allure of
short term success, and simply motivated
by the thrill of the chase. We can easily
be charmed into the simple solution,
the one that gets us a reward for very
little work. Certainly, the emergence
of lowcost
telephony options presents cable systems
with exactly that opportunity. In just
the last eighteen months alone, subscribers
have been barraged with powerful advertising
campaigns and the adoption of alternative
telephony services has surpassed all
expectations.

Advanced Services: Making Sense of the Signals Despite
the Noise
By Rob McCann
In a time of advancing
services and new applications, it can
be reassuring to know that the basic
physics of the cable network are still
at the root of quality service delivery.
All too often we forget that in the final
stretch to the subscriber home we do
nothing more than move electromagnetic
waves over shielded and insulated copper.
For those who have been technical operations
managers over the past decade and touting
the necessity of consistently high standards
for plant maintenance, your redemption
is now being delivered.
